TIFF '2014

I had planned on viewing 6 films this year, unfortunately I was only able to view 3 films.  This year's CITY to CITY Programming focused on Seoul, Korea. I cannot tell you how excited I was when I found this out. So of course I made sure I saw a minimum of 2 films from this category.

Without a doubt the film I wanted to see the most at TIFF was a Korean film titled A Hard Day starring Lee Sun-Kyun. I really liked him in the k-drama Pasta and thought he would be great for this action packed film. Sadly- the showtime I was aiming for was sold out so I never got to see the film :(

However I did get to see other's... check out my brief reviews below:

Films I wanted to see:

  • A Hard Day (Korean)
  • In Her Place (Korean/Canadian)
  • Who I am No System is Safe (German)
  • Second Coming (British)
  • Tale of Princess Kaguya (Japanese)
  • Tokyo Fiancée ( Japanese/French)
  • Cart (Korean)
  • Cub (English)
  • X+Y (British)
  • Midsummer's Night Dream Modernization

Films screened:

  1. Confession (Korean)
  2. October Gale (Canadian Director)
  3. Scarlet Innocence (Korean)
CONFESSION (5/10 stars)

Synopsis great. Execution needs some work.
Sometimes dialogue seemed force between the 3 male characters (In-Chul, Min-soo and Hyun-tae).
Plot was constant with good climax. Symbolism and meaning of film was very well thought out and executed regarding friendship, loyalty and more importantly trust. Fave scene of film was by-far the ending in which Hyun-tae's reflection was shot in a cracked mirror, symbolizing his imperfections and casting out one's thought of his previous innocent image. In-Chul and Hyun-Tae suffered in this film, however I could not help but ache for Min-soo whose innocence and kindnesses buried him in the end.

Q&A Period available after film screening with Korean producer and director.

OCTOBER GALE (5/10 stars)

Synopsis better than the film itself. Only thing that brought this film justice was the beautiful cinematography, score music and leading female character Patricia Clarkson. Minor twist in plot was over-hyped in synopsis. Overall plot was very stagnant and leading male character Scott Speedman easy on the eyes, however acting was bleh.

Q&A Period available after film screening with leading characters and director.

SCARLET INNOCENCE (7/10 stars)
Please note this film is not suitable for a younger audience. Many adult scenes.

Sex. Love.Betrayal.Revenge.Cycle of Life.

Beautifully executed. Super engaging film. Acting excellent. Humorous.

Only downfall was the extensive adult scenes, for which I believe could have been reduced dramatically. Their length and in-depth were not needed to carry on the film.

Q&A period n/a.
